In this month’s interview, we catch up with our Kids 1st Quorum’s Deputy Manager Rachael Telford.

Name: Rachael Telford

Position: Deputy Manager

Number of years at Kids 1st: 10

Number of years in your profession: 16

What did you want to be when you were younger?
When I was a little girl, all I wanted to do was be a teacher and look after children. After school I went on to obtain my BTEC National Diploma in Early years and have never looked back!!

What made you want to be a Deputy Manager?
When I finished my degree in 2010 I really thought I would go down the social care route for children. But after graduating, I knew that the nursery setting was the place I wanted to be! When the deputy manager post was advertised I jumped at the chance to showcase my skills, I love to help, train and support staff and I knew this was the job for me. The role allows me to help assist our staff and still care for the babies and children in our nursery – so it’s the perfect mixture.

What is a typical day like?
Wow!! Very busy…throughout the day there are a variety of tasks that need to be completed; this includes daily numbers, registers, staff holidays, responding to emails and much, much more.

A typical morning consists of meeting and greeting parents and answering any queries they may have – as well as supporting the rooms over a very busy breakfast period. I always make sure I pop into each room and ensure that all staff and children are ready for their day ahead.

Around 10am we have regular “show-arounds” for new potential parents, after this it is time to start the lunch time period. This is when I help and support staff to ensure that dinners run smoothly!

In the afternoon once the lunch time period is over and all staff are settled back into their rooms ready for the afternoon session, I usually spend some time observing the staff in the rooms. This really helps with their personal development.

Before we know it, it is time for the day to come to an end! This is an important part of the day as we are always around to meet and greet parents as they leave, just as we do in the morning.

What’s the best thing about your job?
Knowing that I make a difference to our staff team, the children and their families makes it all worthwhile. Also, it is amazing to watch our children flourish and know that I play an important part in that process.

What is your favourite children’s book?
It has to be the “Gruffalo”. This story shows how a little mouse can be brave and show courage throughout his journey through the forest. The main character encounters many obstacles and overcomes his fears. This story is full of laughs and allows children to use their imagination! All of our children love the Gruffalo too!

What is your favourite children’s film?
Beauty and the Beast, I love watching this film with my two sons. I really enjoy seeing them learn what true love is all about in their own way.

What is your favourite animal and why?
Sheep, I just love small lambs and fluffy sheep!!!

What is your top childcare tip?
Have fun and enjoy it!! Let the children play and explore in an environment filled with love.
